Events are set in motion when a young man (Klinger) retrieves the glove, apparently dropped unawares by the woman we see only from the back. The man’s loss of his hat may signify that he is also losing his head and about to enter the world of fantasies and dreams. The shift from a bright, rational foreground to a dark, mysterious background introduces a note of uncertainty.
